New York CNN —Jewish students at major universities told lawmakers on Thursday they feel unsafe on campus amid a surge in antisemitism. At a roundtable hosted by the House Education and Workforce Committee, students from Columbia University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other schools described hearing violent chants on campus and complained administrators are not doing enough to fight antisemitism. “In the past five months, I have become traumatized,” said Talia Khan, a second-year graduate student at MIT. Eden Yadegar, a junior at Columbia University, described how Jewish students were attacked by people wielding sticks outside of the university library, and how she has been mocked on campus as well as on social media. The committee held a hearing in December questioning the presidents of Harvard, MIT and the University of Pennsylvania about antisemitism.

New York CNN —The Federal Trade Commission on Monday sued to block the $25 billion deal between Kroger and Albertsons, alleging the largest supermarket merger in US history would lead to higher prices for consumers. The merger, announced in 2022, sought to combine the fifth and tenth largest retailers in the country. “This supermarket mega merger comes as American consumers have seen the cost of groceries rise steadily over the past few years. ☆ FTC fines cybersecurity company Avast $16.5 million for tracking and selling user data

CNN —Cybersecurity software company Avast faces a $16.5 million fine from the Federal Trade Commission after the agency filed a complaint Wednesday accusing the company of selling consumer data to third parties. The FTC says Avast, a firm that promises to protect consumer data from online tracking, has done the opposite, collecting and selling user browsing data without knowledge or consent while simultaneously misleading users. Furthermore, the FTC says Avast told users it would only share information in “anonymous and aggregate form,” though this was not the case. “Because it is intrinsically sensitive, browsing data warrants heightened protection.”The FTC says Avast sold data to a range of over 100 clients, including consulting firms, advertising companies and data brokers. On top of the multi-million dollar fine, Avast is being hit with a ban from the FTC to prohibit the company from selling or licensing data for advertising purposes.

CNN —The International Criminal Court’s prosecutor Karim Khan says his office has received a referral from five countries to investigate whether crimes have been committed in the Palestinian territories as part of Israel’s response to the October 7 Hamas terror attacks. LONDON (AP) — The British government confirmed Sunday it may scrap a big chunk of an overdue and over-budget high-speed rail line once touted as a way to attract jobs and investment to northern England. The Conservative government insists no final decision has been made about the embattled High Speed 2 project. CNN —Kevin Maxen has become the first male coach in a US men’s professional sports league to come out as gay. In an interview with Outsports, the Jacksonville Jaguars associate strength coach said he no longer wanted to lie, as well as hoping to inspire others by publicly coming out. “I don’t want to feel like I have to think about it anymore,” Maxen told Outsports. Carl Nassib became the first active NFL player in league history to announce that he is gay in 2021. I know our players and staff feel the same.”Per Outsports, Maxen is the “first publicly out male coach in a major American men’s pro sports league,” with WNBA coach Curt Miller, who publicly came out to the media as gay in 2015, also a publicly out male coach in an American professional sports league.

Vertical mergers have historically received less attention from regulators and the courts, but Wednesday’s draft guidelines explicitly say that the US government may consider certain kinds of vertical mergers to be harmful to competition. Spurred by an executive order signed by President Joe Biden in 2021, Wednesday’s draft updates are the result of more than a year of development. (The new draft guidelines, a copy of which CNN reviewed, do not directly reference the consumer welfare standard.) And the Justice Department lost its appeal to block a multimillion-dollar merger between two major sugar producers in another closely watched case. “Unfortunately, things don’t always go our way,” Khan said in response to questions about whether the FTC has exceeded its authority.

The SEC data analyzed by CNN shows that home decor sales have doubled at both Home Depot and Lowe’s in that time period. By 2022, decor products accounted for 5.4% of Lowe’s sales – more than the tools, building materials, flooring or hardware categories. In 2019, year-over-year net sales at Home Depot and Lowe’s grew by roughly 2% and 1%, respectively. In 2020, Home Depot sales grew by nearly 20%, while Lowe’s saw sales jump by roughly 24%. While still primarily home improvement retailers, expanding into home decor was simply a logical opportunity for Home Depot and Lowe’s, Saunders said — especially online.
